Exciting Changes for Mercy Athletics

This upward movement marks an unprecedented year of success for our athletic programs.

June 6, 2022

This year has been one of tremendous growth for Mercy Athletics. We created new teams, renovated and dedicated the gym floor, and established a new apparel partnership. Moving into the 2022-23 school year, the Mercy Magic will rise to new Interscholastic Athletic Association of Maryland (IAAM) conferences.

In the fall, we introduced and piloted a Varsity Tennis program that will now be a full-fledged member of the IAAM “B” Conference. For the first time in Mercy history, we fielded freshman teams in soccer and volleyball. Also for the first time in many years, we were able to field a JV Softball team, becoming one of only four schools in the IAAM able to offer JV Softball.

With a complete renewal of our gym floor, we honor a Mercy legend—a Mercy athlete, our dean of students, and longtime basketball coach—by naming it the Mary Ella Marion ’76 Court. Her signature in two corners of the floor completes the new design, which will be a beautiful space for generations of Mercy students.

Mercy Athletics is forming a partnership with Nike. Moving forward, Nike will supply all athletic uniforms and Mercy Athletics apparel, unifying our teams under one exceptional apparel brand.

Finally, with our recent success in a wide array of sports, I am excited to announce that we have made the following upward movements in the IAAM:

  • Varsity Cross Country is moving from the “C” Conference to the “B” Conference
  • Varsity Basketball is moving from the “B2” Conference to the “A” Conference
  • Varsity Softball is moving from the “B” Conference to the “A” Conference
  • Varsity Lacrosse is moving from the “B” Conference to the “A” Conference

This upward movement marks an unprecedented year of success for our athletic programs, and I am extremely proud of all our players and coaches. We are looking forward to meeting these new challenges head-on and watching the successful evolution of Mercy Athletics.

Go Magic!
