Theatre Arts

Footlighters, Mercy’s drama company, allows Mercy Girls to explore various areas of theatre arts including acting, theatre marketing, and technical theatre. Footlighters produces a play and a musical annually. For students interested in technical aspects of theatre, Footlighters provides a number of opportunities in scenic design and creation, lighting design, sound design, audio engineering, costume design, make-up design and more. Recent Footlighters productions include Into the Woods, A Midsummer Night's Dream, Steel Magnolias, This is a Test, and Getting to Know...Rodgers and Hammerstein’s Cinderella.

Elective course offerings in theatre arts are designed to introduce students to theory and practice, techniques of acting, and the evaluation of theatrical products. Introduction to Theatre serves to expose students to the theory and practice of the theatre and its crafts, including acting, directing, design and production. In Women and Theatre, students obtain an historical perspective of women in playwriting, acting and directing, and apply contemporary issues to the practice, text, and criticism of the stage. In Introduction to Acting, students participate in scene work, class exercises, and written analyses of theatre and characters.
